How to? Circular Center in Jux image
#1
Question
I found an image created by a member of a Jux facebook page that I got a chance to tinker with. I wanted to figure out the source/cause of the large circle in the center of the fractal which allowed the environment map to show through, almost in its entirety. I did manage to manipulate it by changing the imaginary number by increments until the circle turned into a somewhat wobbly or jaggedy square. I would like to know if I am correct that the imaginary number is what created the 'portal" or is there another factor at work?

See following image.

As you probably know, any point in Mandelbrot mode has a corresponding Julia set that depends on the location, and exploring the Mandelbrot set shows that Julia set in the thumbnail. At c=0,0 the Julia set is a simple circle. A similar thing happens at every miniature Mandelbrot - a Julia set corresponding the location within the minibrot, but with filaments going out similarly to the minibrot. C won't be 0,0 at the minibrots, but the corresponding point will have a circular Julia set at the center, and small variations will give the range of other Julia shapes. You can usually use Julia exploring to see the variations, with Precision increased, but with large zooms you may need to increase Low Bailout and Julia Max Iterations to see it and sometimes the Julia explorer doesn't keep pace with the main settings.

In this particular case, C real is still 0 because the minibrot is on the main antenna to keep all the rays straight and symmetric, which is not usually the case.

I found the only way to increase or decrease the Julia numbers in single digit increments was to position the cursor to the the right of the number in the sequence, hit backspace and change the number to a higher or lower number. if I use the arrows to the right of the numbers or use that scroll wheel on the mouse, the number changes are too fast for precise incremental changes. I wish I could slow the changes down without having to go the first tedious process mentioned above.

Yes, editing a high precision number is tedious. Ctrl and Shift keys are used to speed up dragging or clicking buttons, and for lower precision numbers it works fine. The C controls have variable speeds depending on the zoom level for convenience, but it's not good for very fine control. If the default were finer, it would be too slow for general use. I haven't used the Alt key so I could make that do very slow changes, but to get arbitrary adjustment (eg here you want variation at the 8th or 9th decimal) would require something more flexible.

Here is another way: with Julia Exploring enabled, set Julia Precision to about 5, and move the mouse around the center of the preview; when it's where you want, press the J key.

Thank you very much for that last tip. Now I've found a new way to tinker with these fractals. I'm going to experiment using this method. perhaps increase the precision? I have to see what that does.
